White House Says Tax Refunds Will Go Out On Time, Despite Shutdown

Good News Trump White House Says Government Shutdown Won't Impact Tax Refunds

Millions of United States taxpayers will still receive refunds despite an ongoing partial government shutdown, the White House has said. Although refund checks will still be printed if the shutdown drags on, the shutdown could make it challenging for taxpayers to contact the IRS.

"Tax refunds will go out", said Russell T. Vought, the acting director of the White House Office of Management and Budget.

The White House will issue guidance that will make the tax move official by detailing how the government will go about issuing the refunds.

By the end of November 2018, the IRS had processed over 154 million tax returns.

Paying these tax refunds could help the White House avoid an enormous political and economic mess next month. If that money had been frozen during the government shutdown, Trump could have found himself under enormous pressure to change his approach and back down in his demand for money to erect sections of wall along the Mexico border.

As the government shutdown continues some people are wondering how much longer it will last and if it will affect their tax return. The state is waiting for the shutdown to end before accepting tax returns. That's within the normal timeframe.

As the partial government shutdown heads into its third week, The Washington Post reports 38 million low-income Americans would face severe reductions to their food stamps if the shutdown continues into February. "I appreciate the hard work of the employees and their commitment to the taxpayers during this period". A delay in the announcement or opening of the tax filing season could adversely affect taxpayers and their ability to receive their tax refund on time. The package was signed into law by Trump as his signature legislative achievement. Additionally, a 1040 form has been reduced to the size of a postcard and is expected to draw questions as people file 2018 tax returns.

Nonpartisan tax experts have projected that the law will bring lower taxes for the great majority of Americans, though not all. Republicans controlling the congressional purse strings for years accused the IRS of having a liberal bias and unfairly targeting conservative tax-exempt groups.

As Vox reported last week, the IRS plan was to furlough all but about 10,000 of its workers, (keeping just 12.5 percent of employees working) thus making processing tax refunds hard, if not impossible.
