UN Security Council meets on DR Congo vote

The opposition has since said that the vote was marred by widespread irregularities.

"Since independence in 1960, the DRC has never experienced a peaceful, democratic transfer of power", the department said.

According to CENI's timetable, provisional results are due to be published by January 6 - a goal that the commission had reaffirmed just on Tuesday.

France's United Nations ambassador says the Security Council is keeping close watch on vote counting in the presidential election in Congo.

"The Democratic Republic of Congo is at a historic moment toward a democratic transition", a spokesperson for the EU's diplomatic arm said.

Democratic Republic of Congo's ruling coalition accused the country's Catholic Church on Friday of behaving in an "irresponsible and anarchic" way after it said it knew the victor of last Sunday's presidential election.

Kabila's government has also cut off internet access and shut down Radio France Internationale and local media outlets in order to prevent the circulation of "fake" results.

The French government-funded news service RFI said in a January 2 statement that authorities have blocked almost all its FM broadcasts in the DRC since January 1, and withdrew the accreditation of its correspondent, Florence Morice.

The opposition has been split between two main candidates, Martin Fayulu, a former Exxon Mobil manager who was a relative unknown months ago, and Felix Tshisekedi, the son of late opposition icon Etienne Thisekedi.

But, he stressed, "these were not able to significantly affect the choice which the Congolese people clearly expressed through the ballot box".

Both the opposition and ruling coalition said on Monday they were on track to win after a turbulent election day on Sunday in which many Congolese were unable to vote due to an Ebola outbreak, conflict and logistical problems.

"We are working around the clock".

First results are expected on Sunday.

"We are waiting and trying to adapt, searching for places where we can still find network because we need it to work", businessman Paul Odimba said.

Nangaa later told a news conference that election officials had collected about 20 percent of the results needed.

"The consolidation of the results must continue with transparency", Delattre told reporters.

Citing the possibility of violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, US president Donald Trump has deployed 80 troops with "appropriate equipment" and aircraft to the nearby Gabon, he informed Congress in a letter.

Respect for freedom of the press and expression was "a key element in guaranteeing the transparency and credibility of the ongoing electoral process", a foreign ministry spokesman said.
