Trump claims he's cutting FEMA aid for California wildfires

Donald Trump stands alongside Gov. Jerry Brown and Gov.-elect Gavin Newsom as they view damage from the Camp Fire in Paradise California on Nov. 17 2018

"Billions of dollars are sent to the State of California for Forest fires that, with proper Forest Management, would never happen, ' the president tweeted Wednesday morning, after initially misspelling it 'Forrest" in an earlier tweet.

The tweet states that the president has ordered FEMA to stop sending money "unless they get their act together", which the president calls "unlikely".

Trump deleted his tweet and reposted it to correct his spelling of the word "forest".

When the fires broke out, Trump blamed California's poor forest management and threatened to withhold federal funding if the state didn't change its practices.

President Donald Trump threatened Wednesday to withhold money to help California cope with wildfires a day after new Gov. Gavin Newsom asked him to double the federal investment in forest management.

The latest announcement drew an immediate response from the state's new governor. I will continue to work in Congress, and with the Administration to ensure we have the funds needed to recover from these disasters. "The people of CA - folks in Paradise", a community that was among the hardest hit by the Camp Fire past year, "should not be victims to partisan bickering".

"Our climate is changing - we have to change with it". The state legislature has already set aside $200 million for managing forests, according to The Sacramento Bee. Another 40 percent is held by companies, Native American tribes or families. If so, it's not working well so far, since Pelosi instantly responded by fingering Trump's buddy and her fellow Californian, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, and demanding that he join her in defending their state from Trump's destructive threats.

The state has requested an additional $9 billion from the federal government for wildfire relief, but it's unclear how much of that money would go through FEMA.

The freaky proclamation furthers the administration's attempt to pin the devastation on environmentalists while ignoring the clear impact climate change is having on extreme fires out west.

"Declaring disasters is entirely the president's discretion; FEMA only makes recommendations", Fugate said in a phone interview.

"It is a disgraceful situation in lives & money!", the tweet says.

This tweet came hours after Newsom posted this message about the need to prepare for natural disasters.

"The President has seen first-hand our fire-ravaged areas in Northern California", he said.
