Truck driver in crash of hockey team's bus pleads guilty

Jaskirat Sidhu

The driver of a truck involved in a fatal crash with a bus carrying a Canadian junior hockey team on Tuesday pleaded guilty to 29 counts of unsafe driving causing death or bodily harm.

Following his appearance on Tuesday, Sidhu and his lawyer, Mark Brayford, spoke with reporters.

The man accused in the Humboldt Broncos crash is pleading guilty to charges of risky driving causing death and unsafe driving causing bodily harm.

The Humboldt Broncos tour bus was travelling to a playoff game in a rural part of Saskatchewan province on April 6, 2018 when it collided with Sidhu's truck at a highway intersection.

A date for sentencing was not immediately known.

"He wanted the families to know that he's devastated by the grief that he's caused them. That's all I needed to hear", Thomas said.

Michelle Straschnitzki, whose son Ryan was paralyzed in the crash, said the surprise guilty plea was a "good start" that will help with the healing process for families such as hers. I don't want you to plea bargain. Saskatchewan's Ministry of Highways made improvements to the intersection after a government-ordered report identified safety issues, including trees that would have prevented the drivers of the bus and tractor-trailer from seeing each other.

His wife added she's anxious the guilty plea will lead to a lighter sentence for Sidhu. The increase came as oil prices fell more than forty dollars less than USA crude was selling for. "I know Mr. Sidhu has also been deeply affected by this tragedy". Whether Sidhu spends one day or one decade in custody is "irrelevant" to him, Thomas said.

Michelle Straschnitzki, whose son, Ryan, was paralyzed in the crash, said she is anxious the guilty plea will mean a lighter sentence.

In Saskatchewan, the starting point for unsafe driving causing death when no alcohol is involved is about two years, Fox said, with sentences rising based on aggravating factors.

"It's something we all have to live with for the rest of our lives". "He's got to spend the rest of his life with it". "The rest of the sentence doesn't matter to me, it's not going to bring Evan back".
