Toyota recalls 1.7 million vehicles to replace front passenger airbag inflators

Toyota announced Wednesday the recall of 1.7 million vehicles in North America to replace potentially deadly Takata front passenger air bag inflators, according to the Associated Press. When exposed to long-term high heat or humidity the airbags can explode upon deployment which is what could cause the injury or death to the drivers or passengers in the vehicles equipped with the faulty airbags, according to the NHTSA. The airbags are part of ongoing issues with Takata, who supplied airbags to almost every major automaker.

U.S. authorities in 2014 exposed the Takata airbag defect, which has since resulted in a series of massive recalls concerning at least 100 million units worldwide from multiple manufacturers.

The recall covers Toyota models including the 2010 through 2016 4Runner, the 2010 through 2013 Corolla and Matrix, and the 2011 through 2014 Sienna.

The recall also covers the 2010 to 2012 ES 350, the 2010 to 2017 GX 460, the 2010 to 2015 IS 250C and 350C, the 2010 to 2013 IS 250 as well as the 350, and the 2010 to 2014 IS-F. In total, 19 automakers are recalling more than 100 million potentially faulty inflators worldwide.

A list of the latest recalled vehicles is available from Toyota on its website but owners can also check their vehicles VIN number online to see if they should have the airbags replaced. Automakers are scheduled to replace 10 million more starting this month.

Ford and Honda have already announced Takata airbag recalls.

Takata made 50 million defective airbags that were installed in about 37 million vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Since that time one third of the recalled inflators still have not been replaced, according to an annual report from the government and a court-appointed monitor a year ago.

Takata was forced to file for bankruptcy protection in June 2017 before the firm was acquired by Key Safety Systems in April 2018.

The problem caused by inflators made by Takata Corp has resulted in the largest series of auto recalls in United States history. The ACCC earlier this year added some 1.1 million vehicles to the compulsory recall.

The Takata airbag recall has impacted most auto manufacturers around the world.
