Suspicious packages sent to foreign missions in Australia

Melbourne police say they are dealing with suspicious packages

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) said in a tweet that emergency services responded to "suspicious packages" at embassies and consulates in Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and Victoria.

However the USA embassy in Canberra was not targeted with a package, a spokesperson said.

Two fire trucks, a hazardous materials vehicle and police cars were called to the Consulate-General of India on St Kilda Road, where staff sat outside the building, telling reporters they had been told not to comment to reporters.

Authorities did not confirm the specific locations or intended targets of any of the packages, but the Australian federal police confirmed it was investigating and would examine the packages. "The circumstances are being investigated", it said.

Police did not identify any of the embassies or consulates involved.

A spokesman for the USA consulate in Melbourne told CNN that after receiving a suspicious package staff "followed standard procedures and alerted local authorities".

Victoria Police will work to assist the AFP and other agencies including the MFB with the management and investigation of this issue.

It was immediately unclear if a package was found at the Indian consulate in Melbourne too.

There was also an alert of a hazardous material incident at Yertchuch Avenue in Ashwood, in Melbourne's eastern suburbs, where the Swiss consulate is based.

There were no immediate reports of any of the consulate staff being harmed in the incidents.

"At this time we believe the matter is targeted and not impacting the general community", the statement said.

Local media has reported parcels were delivered to consulates and embassies of the UK, the United States, New Zealand, Germany, Korea, India and Switzerland.

Hazmat and fire crews are seen outside the Indian and French Consulates on St Kilda Road in Melbourne.

"We are liaising closely with the AFP and the local authorities regarding the situation", the spokesperson said.

The incidents come after Sydney's Argentinian consulate was partially evacuated on Monday after reports of a suspicious substance.
