Iranian and Iran-backed groups including Lebanon's Hezbollah have deployed into Syria in support of President Bashar al-Assad's government during the war.

"Two areas hosting military positions of Iranian forces and the Lebanese Hezbollah movement have been targeted", the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said. On that occasion an erroneous Syrian anti-aircraft missile flew into Israeli airspace, and was destroyed by Israeli air defenses.

The last Israeli attack reported by the state media was on December 25, when a missile attack wounded three Syrian soldiers.

In September, a Russian transport aircraft was accidentally downed by Syrian ground batteries in a friendly-fire incident that Moscow blamed on Israel.

The S-300 systems were delivered to Syria late past year, but they are not yet believed to be in use, as the Syrian air defense teams still need to be trained to operate them.
