Storm dumps snow on Midwest; at least 5 dead in crashes

ABC News Snow will stretch across the Midwest throughout Saturday afternoon

Major cities in the zone, including St. Louis, could get more than 6 inches of snow.

Yet more snow is forecast, and the Weather Channel is predicting that St Louis could see one of it's heaviest 2 two-day snowfall events on record.

It would be the most snow the city has had in a single storm since 2014 when a January blizzard dumped 10.8 inches.

Large sections of Missouri, Illinois and IN are under winter weather advisories, and hazardous travel conditions are expected through most of the weekend.

The storm was pretty much over by late afternoon when the Kansas City Chiefs hosted the Indianapolis Colts in an National Football League playoff game, but seats in Arrowhead Stadium were still covered in snow and fans tailgated under tents in the stadium parking lot.

"There's snow time like Showtime", the Chiefs said on Twitter, sharing video of the team's quarterback Patrick Mahomes arriving at the stadium in the snow.

The central United States is being bombarded by snow as a winter storm hits the area.

The National Weather Service in St. Louis called for 8 to 12 inches of snow through late Saturday.

On Saturday, officials reported almost 11 inches of snow at Lambert International Airport in St. Louis, where most flights were canceled or delayed. But it cited progress Saturday morning as crews worked to clear routes and bring "water and food to stranded motorists". "The models this morning are 2 degrees colder than (Thursday), which will lead to higher amounts of snow and ice than were forecast (then)", CNN meteorologist Chad Myers says.

At Lambert International Airport in St. Louis, most flights were canceled or delayed. "More cancellations are likely on Saturday and Sunday", airport officials said. Lower accumulations are expected in DE and Baltimore, as well as around Richmond, where precipitation Sunday should be freezing rain.

"In much of swath from Missouri to southern OH, this will heavy and wet and a strain to shovel", AccuWeather meteorologist Bill Deger wrote in a blog post.

The University of Missouri men's basketball game Saturday at the University of SC was moved to Sunday because of weather-related travel problems, the team tweeted. The Southeast has seen abundant precipitation in December and January, and the additional rain could put a strain on already-high rivers.
