Shutdown could slow flow of new craft beer

Funk Yo Couch from Wiley Roots turned heads in 2018

The breweries can still sell new beers in the state, but they are missing out on out-of-state sales until the shutdown ends.

Across town at Zipline Brewery, co-founder Tom Wilmoth says he's usually ahead of the game when it comes to getting labels approved but as the shutdown drags on, he's feeling the effects as well.

US -based breweries have become an unexpected casualty of the federal government shutdown. Saturday begins the fourth week of the government shutdown.

The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau is part of the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

"We are pushed to innovate constantly, and right now we probably have 12 to 15 beers that are on hold because of the shutdown", said Dave Taylor, marketing director for Oskar Blues. We're going to take the next couple of minutes to talk about one of them - the craft beer industry. It received more than 192,000 label applications in 2018. Katchever and his team brewed something special for their big anniversary party.

However it will be impacted as soon as the government opens back up because it's going to take the TTB a while to catch up.

That's bad news for craft beer brewers. Some grassroots businesses could face delays for opening, "Anyone that's implanting a brewery right now, it's an expensive cost and anyone that's created a timeline based on when they can open, when they can get approval- right now those people are all just sitting in wait", Darcy Kniefel, Beer Ambassador for Midnight Sun Brewing Company said.

Beer drinkers will not get to sample brand new creations from their favorite breweries during the government shutdown.

"It's that first step and if they don't have that they can't move forward", Bailey said. The work stops. And it really puts the beer industry at a disadvantage as it relates to innovation, as it relates to new products being introduced, new labels being approved.
