Roger Federer has broken down while paying tribute to the deceased Australian coach who he credits with forging the playing technique that took him to 20 grand slam titles. "I hope he would be proud", Federer said.

Roger Federer cried and then apologized when he was asked a question about the death of one of his earliest coaches during a CNN interview this week.

Every year since 2005, according to the Australian newspaper, he has invited Carter's Adelaide-based parents to watch him at the Australian Open in Melbourne, paying all their expenses. "The right coaches at the right time". During an interview with CNN's Christina Macfarlane, the tennis icon broke down into tears while remembering his late coach Peter Carter.

Federer expressed his love for the Australian tennis calendar, as there is much that connects him to the country.

"So, it was somewhat of a wake-up call for me when he passed away, and I really started to train hard". "Oh man, I still miss him so much".

Federer is the two-time defending champion in Melbourne, and has looked in top form heading into the event, defeating World No 4 Alexander Zverev on the way to a second Hopman Cup title.

Federer turned 37 last August 8, a day before what would have been Carter's 53rd birthday.

It is learnt that it was Carter who prepared Federer at a very young age but the coach could not see the Swiss star winning his first Wimbledon title as he passed away in a vehicle crash a year before. "I've been training really well....still happy playing, and I won the last two Australian open editions, so yeah i definitely should be going in there with confidence", added Federer.

When Federer learnt of his coach's death, he ran through the streets "bawling and hysterical".

Federer told CNN it was a career-changing moment. "We played each other at 14, 16, 20 years old, and who knew we'd be Wimbledon champions and world number ones". Has covered two Olympics (Sydney 2000 and London 2012), numerous Australian Open tennis tournaments and several AFL grand finals.

"Am I confident? I don't know". I feel good. I've been training really well.

Already eliminated in singles, Stauffer noted that Federer wore a black armband when he played and lost in the doubles in Toronto alongside Wayne Ferreira - a South African - against Australian duo Joshua Eagle and Sandon Stolle. "The legends that I admire, the coaches that I've had in Tony Roche and Peter Carter - they've been incredibly inspirational and important to me in my life".
