Rod Rosenstein Reportedly Leaving Justice Department After AG Confirmation Hearings

According to ABC News, which cited multiple sources familiar with the deputy attorney general's plans, Rosenstein has already informed President Donald Trump and White House officials of his plan to leave the administration once William Barr, Trump's nominee for attorney general, takes office. The Deputy AG had apparently planned all along to serve for two years.

She says he wants to help with the transition to a new attorney general.

The deputy attorney general has been managing special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation and has signaled to other officials that he would leave when he was satisfied that Mueller's investigation was either complete or close enough to completion that it was protected.

Russian officials have said the allegations were invented to excuse the election loss of a presidential candidate, as well as deflect public attention from actual instances of election fraud and corruption.

Barr's Senate confirmation hearing begins January 15, which means a confirmation vote at the earliest would occur in mid-February.

Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, who Trump named in November, now has ultimate authority over Mueller and the investigation. The appointment followed the recusal of Sessions because of his work on the Trump campaign and Trump's firing of former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

Once confirmed, Barr would assume oversight of the probe. Barr is expected to face questioning from Democrats about his views of the Mueller investigation at next week's hearing.

It is unclear how long after Barr's appointment Rosenstein is expected to remain within the DOJ.

Rosenstein's job status has appeared tenuous at times, most notably in September, when he showed up at the White House expecting to be fired over news reports that he had discussed secretly recording the president. But Trump opted not to replace him.
