Radio Signals From A Galaxy Light Years Away Have Been Reported

The uniquely shaped CHIME telescope in British Columbia

"Fast radio bursts are exceedingly bright given their short duration and origin at great distances, and we haven't identified a possible natural source with any confidence", said Loeb in a statement after the publication of a previous paper in the Astrophysical Journal Letters. The latest entry, CHIME (for Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment), has only just been built, but its builders started having it do science while still under construction.

Scientists have discovered mysterious repeating radio bursts coming from space for the first time since 2007.

"We don't know what fast radio bursts are to begin with".

Unlike typical FRBs that come and go, the discovery of a repeating FRB is vital to increasing our understanding of them, as we are able to train our radio telescopes towards them to study them further. FRBs are among the few types of signal that interact with the diffuse fog of electrons that exists between galaxies.

This is because CHIME's telescope is quite advanced in comparison to the ones that were being used before, and operates in the lower ranges of 400 MHz - the next one was at 700 MHz.

However, CHIME has now added 13 additional FRBs and a second repeater to the list.

And if CHIME was able to make these detections before it was even fully up and running, the researchers are hopeful that the new radio telescope will help them find answers about these mysterious signals. "New racks of compute nodes were being installed and the number of nodes operating, and hence beams on sky, varied from day to day", its scientists say. "There are some models where intrinsically the source can't produce anything below a certain frequency". They're being described as "fast radio bursts". The scattering details suggest there is something unique about structural characteristics of FRB sources.

"Most of the, sort of, reasonable theories involve a neutron star, or possibly a black hole", she explains. "But it has to be in some special place tog I've us all the scattering that we see". A second source of repeating fast radio bursts.

And although this new detection doesn't solve the biggest mysteries surrounding the radio bursts, the researchers who recorded it believe that other repeating fast radio bursts will be found - which could allow them to figure out where they originate. That suggests there might be even more of them, too low to be picked up by CHIME, reported The Independent. One FRB in particular, FRB 121102, is special because it's the only one that seems to be repeating its signal blasts on a regular basis.

"We have discovered a second repeater and its properties are very similar to the first repeater". It is believed these FRB's emanated from a source located about 1.5 billion light years away and Ingrid Stairs, an astrophysicist from the University of British Columbia (UBC), told reporters at The BBC , "Such an event has only been reported once before".

"CHIME is still in its early days and most of the exciting results are yet to come", Smith said.
