Ocean temperatures rising faster than previously thought

Pariahan village pumps drinking water from a well on Nov. 28 2018 in Bulacan north of Manila in the Philippines

The oceans are warming at a faster rate than was thought, according to the biggest analysis of sea temperatures so far.

For the new study, scientists used data collected by a high-tech ocean observing system called Argo, an global network of more than 3,000 robotic floats that continuously measure the temperature and salinityof the water. The studies accounted for the fact that older assessments of ocean temperature relied on less accurate methods than we have today. Researchers said this showed that, contrary to the claims of some sceptics, the world was warming at a...

The four studies, published between 2014 and 2017, provide better estimates of past trends in ocean heat content by correcting for discrepancies between different types of ocean temperature measurements and by better accounting for gaps in measurements over time or location.

Ocean temperatures cited in the paper are recorded using the Argo network comprised of nearly 4,000 robot floats that stay on the surface most of the time but dive to 2,000 meters every few days to measure ocean temperature, pH, salinity, and other details. Hausfather says that 2018 will be the warmest year on record for the oceans, and notes that 2017 and 2016 were the warmest years on record previously. This change would cause sea levels to raise 30 centimeters, ice glaciers to melt, and stronger storms to hit continents.

The planet's oceans are warming a lot quicker than estimated, highlighting the perils of unchecked climate change, according to a new study.

Ocean heating is an important climate change factor, because approximately 93 percent of extra solar energy captured by greenhouse gases builds up in oceans worldwide, said a University of California, Berkeley blog post.

If the target of the Paris Agreement to keep global temperatures within 2 degrees Celsius of their pre industrial levels can be reached the total ocean warming must be cut in half to about 1,037 ZetaJoules by 208. U.S. President Donald Trump, who wants to promote U.S. fossil fuels, plans to pull out of the pact in 2020. The 2013 United Nations. assessment estimated slower rates of heat uptake but did not give a single comparable number. Now we have a system called Argo, a fleet of 4,000 floating robots that can dive as deep as 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) below the sea's surface. Warmer temperature will also damage coral reefs, which are actually nurseries for fish. Ocean heat content is not bothered much by weather fluctuations that do, however, affect the surface temperatures, and it is somewhat affected by El Niño events.

A warmer ocean also contributes to increases in rainfall and leads to stronger and longer-lasting storms like Hurricanes Florence and Harvey. "And so the first outcome will be that sea level will be different in different places depending on the warming".
