National Basketball Association to review Cavaliers release of McCaw

Patrick Mc Caw Cavs

Patrick McCaw's short stay with Cleveland Cavaliers has raised eyebrows around the National Basketball Association, and the league itself is looking into the matter, according to multiple reports.

The Warriors have now asked the National Basketball Association to investigate the Cleveland's signing of McCaw, with some speculation that Cavs merely signed McCaw to spite Golden State, the team that beat Cleveland in the finals three of the last four years.

Speaking Tuesday before Golden State's game with New York, Warriors coach Steve Kerr said he wasn't aware that his team was involved in the review of the McCaw matter. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no details of the probe have been revealed publicly. Eventually, the Cleveland Cavaliers extended McCaw a two-year, $6 million non-guaranteed contract.

The New York Times first reported that the National Basketball Association was reviewing the matter.

"I've got enough to worry about", Kerr said, before adding, "The whole thing was kind of unusual". Cleveland signed McCaw and waived him to pick up recently waived Chicago Bulls point guard Cameron Payne.

The situation seems like the Cavs did McCaw a favor and helped him reach unrestricted free agency earlier than he should have, which harms a team like Golden State, which should have retained his rights for the season.
