MLB Free Agency Rumors: DJ LeMahieu Signs 2-Year Contract With Yankees

DJ LeMahieu, Yankees Agree On 2-Year Contract

The only real question mark in the Yankees' infield is first base, with Luke Voit and Greg Bird returning next season.

The New York Yankees have agreed to a two-year, $24-million deal with second baseman DJ LeMahieu pending a physical, a source told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

LeMahieu is widely regarded as one of the best defenders at second base; winning the NL Gold Glove at the position three times including the last two years.

LeMahieu's multi-positional abilities will allow him to play second base, with Gleyber Torres at shortstop, in the event that the oft-injured Tulowitzki can not take the field. With the young Gleyber Torres featuring at second, it's a good insurance policy to have LeMaheiu as an option.

Brian Cashman has a well-earned reputation for making moves out of absolutely nowhere. In this new age, where a hitter's launch angle is more important than ever the 30-year-old LeMaheiu could be a guy who's HR total will continue to rise in the coming years. Many scouts believe his offensive numbers are mildly inflated by playing his home games at Coors Field.

This move likely signals the end of the Yankees quest after star shortstop, Manny Machado. This will help the Yankees' lineup as it will provide balance. The righty could also slide over to third base late in games, serving as a defensive replacement for the defensively challenged youngster, Miguel Andujar. The infield defense without Didi looked shaky heading into this season, but now with the addition of LeMaheiu, it shouldn't be as big of an issue, regardless of where they plan to play him. The Yankees already are.
