London's Heathrow airport cancels flights after drone sighting

Drones have GPS systems fitted which stop them from functioning when they exceed height restrictions

The airport is planning for an increase in its capacity of up to an extra 25,000 flights a year before the third runway opens, Heathrow said, as it outlined the latest phase of its expansion proposals.

"We are now responding to a drone sighting at Heathrow and are working closely with the Met Police to prevent any threat to operational safety", the spokesperson said. She said: "It is crucial that our plans maximise the benefits of expansion across the country, including for the communities closest to us". "We apologies to passengers for any inconvenience this may cause".

An airport spokesperson said they were working with the Metropolitan Police and had stopped departing flights "as a precaution".

'As a precautionary measure, Heathrow Airport has stopped departures and officers based at Heathrow are now investigating the reports with colleagues from Heathrow Airport, ' the force added.

Flights at Heathrow Airport have been grounded after fresh reports of a drone sighting, with passengers venting their frustration on social media.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said the military was "preparing to deploy the equipment used at Gatwick at Heathrow quickly should it prove necessary".

The incident comes just over two weeks after drone sightings at Gatwick, Britain's second-biggest hub, caused travel misery for tens of thousands of people after flights were suspended over three days.

"Sitting on a plane at #Heathrow". More than 140,000 passengers had their flights disrupted and more than 1,000 flights were affected between December 19th and December 21st 2019.

Grayling said the government would also begin testing the use of counter-drone technology as part of its response to a consultation begun before December's disruption.

Today, the British government announced a package of measures created to give police extra powers to combat drones.

The exclusion zone around airports will be extended to approximately a three-mile radius, with extensions from runway ends.

Drone users can be fined or even jailed if they fly a drone within these zones.
