LaMarcus Aldridge scores 56 as San Antonio Spurs set 3-point records

DeMar DeRozan

Aldridge scored a career-high 56 points to help the Spurs survive the Oklahoma City Thunder and Russell Westbrook's 24 points, 24 assists and 13 rebounds in a double-overtime, 154-147 win. Despite Westbrook and Paul George combining to shoot 2-of-8 in the frame, the rest of the team shot 13-of-18 (72.2 percent) to outscore the Spurs 37-25 and send the game to overtime when Westbrook found Grant for an alley-oop to tie it 130-130 with seconds remaining.

Oklahoma City turned the tide early in the fourth, as Jerami Grant and Dennis Schroder sparked a 21-9 start to tie the game 114-114 with 6:15 remaining.

When the final seconds ticked off the clock after Aldridge connected on two free throws (he shot 16-of-16 from the line), he walked over to a referee and grabbed the ball, before leaving the floor celebrating with teammates, new keepsake in hand. The six-time All-Star scored seven points in double-OT to finally give the Spurs a victory that appeared over before a furious comeback attempt by the Thunder.

Such a brilliant night for Aldridge seemed nearly inconceivable in November, when the veteran suffered through a shooting slump that saw him score six points on 3-of-12 shooting against the Phoenix Suns and 10 points on 3-of-15 shooting in 38 minutes against the Clippers. He's always been known as a Thunder killer and he proved it yet again tonight.

Westbrook set an National Basketball Association season-high for assists with another triple-double, logging 24 points, 24 assists and 13 rebounds.

LaMarcus dropped a career-high 56 points, 16 of which came from his ideal free-throw shooting on the night.

DeMar DeRozan nearly tallied a triple-double (16-11-8), but he missed a shot to win the game in regulation, again in the first overtime and committed a big foul in the final 12 seconds to give the Thunder a little hope.

Kyrie Irving scored 22 points while adding five rebounds and five assists in a 115-99 loss to the Heat.

While Aldridge thrived in overtime, Westbrook struggled, failing to score in either extra period. Not his best night. Ferg is now 11-of-14 from deep over the last two games. He scored a career-high 25 points, added 12 rebounds, and swatted three shots in his 44 minutes.

Davis Bertans and Patty Mills connected on a combined five 3-pointers in the half.

At one point in the first quarter, Marco Belinelli hit three straight.

As San Antonio looked to close things out in the fourth, his baseline turnarounds were too much for a depleted Oklahoma City frontcourt that was without backup center Nerlens Noel, and without Steven Adams for a stretch late, when he went to the locker room with an injury.

They head for Oklahoma City for a rematch Saturday night.
