Laerskool Schweizer-Reneke teacher suspended over race controversy

South Africa teacher suspended over class 'split by race'

The authorities in South Africa have launched an investigation into alleged racism at Laerskool Schweizer-Reneke kindergarten in North West province after a photo showing the segregation of kids went viral.

The photograph shows a group of white learners sitting together while their four black classmates sit at a small table near the door.

"From the information I got from the meeting, it seems that there are a lot of cases here of racism", provincial Education Minister Sello Lehari said after visiting the school. According to eNCA, the parents of the white children were the ones who took their kids out of the school on Thursday morning.

The teacher in charge of a class where black and white children were apparently separated has been suspended with immediate effect.

"MEC for Education (Lehari) willlead a team comprising senior managers to the school who will also conduct an intensive investigation into the matter and action to be taken will be informed by the outcomes of these investigations", Mokgoro's spokesperson Vuyisile Ngesi said. Some black parents whose children have been refused admission to Laerskool Marble Hall say only black children have been placed on the waiting list.

The image began circulating on social media.

This time of year is supposed to be joyous as a lot of kids start their school careers while others return to a higher grade.

"All I saw was messages from the white parents saying "dankie, dankie" ('thank you, thank you') on the WhatsApp group but no one was saying anything about the separation of the learners". However, based on our understanding and the video you will see below, things have intensified outside the school, where protesters, dressed in political regalia, have picketed, chanting angrily and climbing the school's fence.

'The barbaric conduct displayed by private schools of racial segregating children is equally the same as giving innocent children experience of an apartheid system'.

"We want the principal of the school to account".
