Kidnap suspect apparently applied for job day Jayme Closs escaped

Jayme Closs suspect reportedly applied for job, labeled himself an ‘honest guy,’ the day teen escaped

Jake Patterson, the Wisconsin man suspected of kidnapping 13-year-old Jayme Closs and killing her parents, reportedly applied for a job the day Jayme escaped to freedom.

About a week or a week and a half before he allegedly took Closs and killed her parents James and Denise, Patterson twice went to the Closs home. Earlier this week, he was charged with two counts of homicide, one count of kidnapping and one count of armed burglary.

The grandfather of a 13-year-old northwestern Wisconsin girl says she's in "exceptionally good spirits" after being found almost three months after authorities say she was kidnapped during a home invasion that left her parents dead. Patterson's subsequent arrest-which included his confession of shooting James and Denise Closs as well as abducting Jayme-was the result of unexpected, fortuitous circumstances.

It was the only auto they passed on their way to the sleepy country town and it is alleged Jake Patterson - who stands charged of the horrific double slaying and kidnapping the 13-year-old child - was behind the wheel.

Residents of a small Wisconsin town where the mother of Jayme Closs' suspected kidnapper lives are grappling with the disturbing news that someone they knew committed such heinous crimes.

According to the complaint, which was obtained by PEOPLE, Patterson sometimes left Jayme under the bed for as long as 12 hours at a time - depriving her food, water or bathroom breaks.

Richard Jones and Charlie Glynn, Patterson's public defenders, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that they know everyone wants to know why Jayme was abducted.

The storekeeper noted that Patterson didn't come in often, but the last time he stopped by, he noticed a change.

"Yes, it looks like you start out behind the eight ball a little bit", Glynn said.

Pullen said she didn't feel like she could relax until Patterson had been arrested.

Patterson is due back in court on February 6 for a preliminary hearing.

"I'm befuddled as to why they would release this amount of their evidence", Mr Sullivan said. "We just guided her home".

They say it has been an emotional time for the community of Barron, and that they understand the pain the case has generated. The question becomes, 'Can you lay that involvement, that emotion aside and render a verdict based on this case?' They described his demeanor as "appropriate" for a 21-year-old facing such serious charges but didn't elaborate.

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald declined knowledge of this specific employment application, and CNN has reached out to Douglas County Sheriff's Office for comment.

The attorneys said they believe Patterson can get a fair trial, but aren't sure where.
