Hubble captures awe-inspiring PHOTO of Triangulum galaxy that spans 19,400 light-years

NGC 604

The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has captured the most detailed image yet of a the Triangulum Galaxy, a spiral galaxy located at a distance of only three million light-years.

It's our neighbor in a collection of dozens of galaxies called the Local Group, and was captured in unprecedented detail in image consisting of 54 Hubble fields of view stitched together, revealing almost 25 million individually resolved stars. Andromeda, the Milky Way, and the Triangulum Galaxy are the three largest members of the Local Group, measuring 200,000 light-years, 100,000 light-years, and 60,000 light-years across, respectively.

Under favorable conditions, the galaxy can be seen with the naked eye as a fuzzy object in the constellation of the Triangle.

The mosaic of the Triangulum Galaxy showcases the central region of the galaxy and its inner spiral arms. To be able to create the panoramic survey of the 40 billion years that make up the Triangulum Galaxy, Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys captured 54 separate photos and created one very big mosaic.

ESA says the Triangulum image is the second-largest ever released by Hubble and will help astronomers better understand how stars form and evolve.

The near-perfect distribution of stars within Triangulum has led researchers to believe that the galaxy has somehow avoided any major intergalactic collisions and has remained relatively untouched for aeons.

He is looking forward to taking the first observations of the local universe with the James Webb Space Telescope, the successor to Hubble that is scheduled for launch in 2021.

Andromeda and the Milky Way also surpass the Triangulum Galaxy in terms of the number of stars they contain.

The spectacular vista is in fact a giant mosaic, formed from 54 separate images created by Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys.

The abundance of gas clouds in the Triangulum Galaxy is precisely what drew astronomers to conduct this detailed survey. That huge amount of gas and dust allows for rapid star formation, at a rate of approximately one solar mass every two years. "Uncovering the Triangulum galaxy's story will provide an important point of reference in understanding how galaxies develop over time, and the diverse paths that shape what we see today".
