Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Announces She's Running For President In 2020

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard delivers remarks on the second day of the Democratic National Convention at the Wells Fargo Center

Another Democrat is jumping into the quickly forming 2020 Democratic presidential primary contest.

Tulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu elected to Congress, has announced that she is to run for the presidency in 2020 as a Democrat challenger to President Donald Trump. "I look forward to being able to get into this and to talk about it in depth when we make our announcement". Gabbard said health care access, criminal justice reform and climate change would be central to her message, but cited one factor as paramount, asserting, "There is one main issue that is central to the rest, and that is the issue of war and peace".

Gabbard, 37, arrived in Congress six years ago after an underdog campaign for Hawaii's mostly rural 2nd District.

Gabbard, an Iraq War veteran, now serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Rania Batrice, who was a deputy campaign manager for Sanders in 2016, said she will be Gabbard's campaign manager.

That same year, as a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee, Gabbard criticized the party's handling of the presidential primary. Her endorsement came in dramatic fashion, with her resigning as a vice chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee to express her support. Her 2017 meeting with Syrian dictator Bashar Al-Assad drew widespread criticism. That led to more critical attention to Gabbard's foreign policy views, though a few months into the Trump administration, she rejected praise from the president and his allies.

Republicans wasted no time Friday in going after her.

Gabbard's announcement comes after the progressive congresswoman was the headline speaker at a December meet-and-greet with Democrat activists in Exeter, New Hampshire, where she told local reporters that a White House bid was on the table. Gabbard remains popular with some liberals but will have serious competition with other candidates on the left flank of the party.

The US senator Elizabeth Warren, of MA, on 31 December announced she had formed an exploratory committee for a presidential run in what is expected to be a crowded Democratic primary field before the November 2020 presidential election.

The Democratic presidential field could eventually include Senators Kamala Harris, Cory Booker and Kirsten Gillibrand, as well as former Vice President Joe Biden. Bernie Sanders and California Sen.
