Have zero knowledge of assurances given to Maxwell - Langer

Rob Quiney and Glenn Maxwell. More

This time, he entered the spot-light frame even by not appearing in the scene.

Australian cricket coach Justin Langer has dismissed as "careless whispers" suggestions that test outcast Glenn Maxwell had been misled by Cricket Australia about selection.

When Langer was quizzed by a reporter about the sequence of events and reports regarding the alleged advice given to Maxwell, the Australia boss reacted angrily. Maxwell, who last played a Test against Bangladesh in 2017, was reportedly asked to skip county cricket past year by Cricket Australia and was guaranteed a place in the Australian A squad that will tour India. He further went on to call the conjectures around Maxwell's non-selection in Tests as "careless whispers".

Glenn Maxwell and Trevor Hohns. Also, Hohns said the players are free to make up their mind.

"I can't wait to get up there and in amongst it."Burns, who has played 14 Tests, has been knocking on the door this season with Queensland, while Renshaw has been unlucky not to get another call-up until now, since his last appearance at Johannesburg in 2018". There's been some reports about (his) personality. that is literally false.

Maxwell has a better average in the limited-overs format.

"So, I've taken it out of their hands and signed with a County early so at least I can give myself some sort of red-ball cricket and some sort of longer-form experience, because for a player who's played as long as I have I certainly haven't played the amount of first-class cricket as everyone else has". Though he accepts he had received offers from the counties a year ago to revive his Test career, Maxwell still didn't opt, going by the message conveyed from the board.

However, when Maxwell wasn't selected for that A tour, it was seen by many he was guaranteed a seat on the plane to the UAE for the two-test series against Pakistan.

Langer, arguably showing the strain of a taxing month in which he and his team had received widespread criticism on a range of issues, asked the reporter twice "are you certain that's what happened?" regarding the county directive.

"I think when there was a lot of the "good bloke" chat ... being in the group that wasn't picked to go over to the UAE and I wasn't in the Australia A stuff I suppose people start to ask why that certain player is (overlooked)", Maxwell told cricket.com.au's The Unplayable Podcast.

Langer - one of three national selectors - didn't straight-up deny that message was given to Maxwell, but got fiery when it was put to him by a journalist.

"To be honest, they say it's got nothing to do with his personality, but I do". "So sorry everyone for getting grumpy, I didn't mean to get grumpy, but the truth is a lovely thing".

Langer, appointed head coach in May, and Maxwell, keen to stay out of the headlines, both want to move on from the saga and focus on Saturday's ODI series opener against India.
