Google Assistant Aims to Eradicate Language Barriers with Its New Interpreter Mode

Apple’s CES Ad Hits Google And Amazon Where It Hurts

As they don't have microphones to pick up voice commands, though, you'll nearly certainly need a microphone-toting middle-man device (such as a smartphone or Google Assistant smart speaker) to control it. Although today's theme was mostly Google Assistant. Just ask Assistant to "take me home" and Google Maps will open from where you will be able to get Assistant to perform all of the above functionality.

If you know which hotel you want to stay, you can book a room using the Google Assistant with partners like Choice Hotels, AccorHotels, InterContinental Hotels Group, Priceline, Expedia, Mirai and Travelclick - an Amadeus company. The feature is exactly what it sounds like - a way to get Google Assistant to translate a different language, making it easier to have a conversation with someone who may otherwise be impacted by the language barrier.

Google's rolling out a cool new Assistant feature to Google Home devices and smart displays: language interpretation with support for a dozen languages.

Google has been demoing the feature at the American show and is branding the function as a way to have conversation with people from other nationalities, even if you are not fluent in their spoken language. Assistant will also calculate and send your ETA from a given destination to your contacts, which just might be a godsend for chronically late Android users.

There will also be the ability to opt-in to more detailed personal information such as traffic updates to work or calendar updates. Google says Interpreter Mode will work on normal Google Home speakers as well, but without the added benefit of a written translation.

The feature is set to roll out within the next few weeks.

The miniature speaker is now being sold by Currys as part of a tantalising deal.
