Frigid wind chill prompts extreme cold warning

Weekend forecast for Duluth and the Northland

Wind chill values of minus of 40C to minus 45C are occurring over much of Northern Ontario this morning.

In Sudbury, the skies will clearing this afternoon.

There will be a low of -29 with a wind chill of -35 in the evening and -40 overnight. High -21. Wind chill -37 in the morning and -30 in the afternoon.

Again there is a risk of frostbite. Clouds will be on the increase after Midnight, which may help temperatures to start slowly climbing by early Sunday morning. However, the windchill was expected to make that feel like -30 C in the morning, -25 C in the afternoon and -37 C overnight.

"If it's too cold for you to stay outside, it's too cold for your pet to stay outside", the warning adds. Gusty northwest winds of 15 to 20mph with gusts to 30mph have pushed wind chills as cold as -15° at times this morning, and wind chills are likely to remain below zero through at least Noon. The outer layer should be wind resistant.

Kimbell said there will be temporary relief Monday and Tuesday, when temperatures will return to seasonal - which for Thunder Bay is a high of -9 C and a low of -20 C.

Rob Kuhn, a meteorologist with Environment & Climate Change Canada, says any exposed skin could freeze within minutes.

The warning will end Monday with Environment Canada calling for a high of -16C.
