Former Rangers star Rick Nash forced to retire early

Rick Nash announces retirement after 15 NHL seasons

Following consultation with doctors, the 34-year-old chose to quit sport to avoid possible brain injury which concussion-related complications might provoke. "Under the advice of his medical team, the risk of further brain injury is far too great if Rick returns to play". Rick would like to thank everyone who has supported him during this hard time period, " the statement read. As an 18-year-old rookie, Nash scored in his first game with the Blue Jackets on October 10, 2002, and concluded his '02-03 freshman season with 17 goals and 39 points in 74 games, finishing third in Calder Trophy voting.

But in June it was reported that Nash would not be fielding free agent offers while he continued his concussion recovery, despite contracts being on the table. "But there's definitely a chance that I don't".

Nash, 34, was taken first overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2002 NHL Draft and is that franchise's all-time leader in every major offensive category.

The story noted Nash suffered at least three concussions in his career.

Tampa, FL, USA;Boston Bruins left wing Rick Nash (61) celebrates as he scores a goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning during the second period of game one of the second round of the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs at Amalie Arena.

The Ontario native won two Olympic gold medals together with the Canadian team and claimed the world title and 2007 world tournament in Moscow. He spent nine seasons with the Blue Jackets before being traded to the Rangers prior to the 2012-13 season, then spent five-plus seasons in NY before landing in Boston at the 2018 National Hockey League trade deadline.
