Fearing For His Life, Enes Kanter Won't Travel With Knicks To London

NEW YORK NY- DECEMBER 25 Enes Kanter #00 of the New York Knicks celebrates after hitting a three-point basket against the Milwaukee Bucks at Madison Square Garden

"It's pretty sad that all the stuff affects my career and basketball because I want to be out there and help my team win".

He added: "I'm not saying that Erdogan's going to do an operation against me in London but it's more there are lots of insane supporters of his". Kanter's Turkish passport was revoked in 2017, and an worldwide warrant for his arrest was issued by Turkey. That means I am now stateless and pretty much can't leave the United States. I'm not going, I'm just gonna stay here, just practise here.

"They've got a lot of spies there", he said. "There's a chance that I can get killed out there". The Knicks later said Kanter also won't make the trip because of a visa issue.

Enes Kanter says he's not going to London with Knicks because he fears for his life due to "that freaking lunatic, the Turkish president".

Last month, Kanter hit out at "scared little rats" after the National Basketball Association appeared to omit him from a list of the best Turkish players in the league.

Kanter continued, saying, "It's pretty sad" that he can't travel with the Knicks and be there for his team. "That will be a very ugly situation".

Kanter's clash with Erdogan stems from his vocal support of Fethullah Gulen, an exiled Islamic cleric now living Pennsylvania who Erdogan publicly accused of organizing a failed coup attempt in 2016.

The basketball star's father, former professor Mehmet Kanter, was indicted in Turkey previous year and charged with "membership in a terror group", AP reported, although he had publicly disavowed his son's beliefs. The former professor lost his job after the failed military coup even though he publicly disavowed his son and his beliefs.

"Besides Canada, I can not fly anywhere else", he said.

Kanter will stay in NY while the Knicks travel to face Washington at The O2 arena in London on January 17.

Kanter, who has referred to Erdogan as a "bad, bad man" and a "dictator", was forced to abandon the plans to travel to Romania in 2017 and returned to the U.S. via London after his documentation was cancelled by the issuing state.
