FDA warns of possible chocolate, caramel candy hepatitis A contamination

Candy recall over possible Hepatitis A contamination

We are advising consumers not to eat and to throw away any Bauer's Candies Chocolate or Caramel Modjeskas, purchased after November 14, 2018 because a worker in the facility tested positive for hepatitis A.

A public health alert about possible hepatitis A contamination in Modjeskas from Bauer's sweets was announced Thursday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Consumers and retailers have been advised to throw away and not to eat the affected sweets purchased after November 14.

The FDA is recommending that anyone who ate Bauer's Candies Chocolate or Caramel Modjeskas to consult with their healthcare provider to determine whether PEP is indicated.

Bauer's, a Kentucky-based company, began a voluntary recall of the candies, known as Modjeskas, amid fears that they may be contaminated, the FDA said in a safety advisory.

It can happen when an infected person prepares food without washing their hands, even if the person doesn't show signs of illness.

Bauer's sweets did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for additional comment.

Symptoms - which include fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and dark urine - can take anywhere from two to seven weeks after exposure to appear. Young children, however, may not show symptoms.

Unlike other types of hepatitis, it doesn't cause long-term liver damage and doesn't become chronic, the Mayo Clinic adds. It can be spread through contaminated food or water. "Some people with acute liver failure may need a liver transplant", says the Mayo Clinic.

-Don't eat raw or undercooked meat and fish.

-Avoid all beverages of unknown purity, with or without ice.
