FDA: Popular chocolate, caramel sweets could be contaminated with hepatitis A

It said that once the company learned of his illness, they voluntarily closed and sanitized the facility and threw away all the candy.

Chocolates and caramel sweets are linked to a possible Hepatitis A contamination, according to the FDA. "No candy products manufactured after November 25 are affected in any way". The sweets were sold exclusively online and through QVC.

In a statement, the President of Bauer's sweets said that it voluntarily closed its facility and "discarded all candy in house, sanitized per protocol, and began working with Federal and State agencies" when it learned of the employee's illness. We are now working with Bauer's sweets, located in Kentucky, on a voluntary recall of affected products.

Bauer's sweets released a statement on their website regarding the FDA alert, explaining that a worker in their facility tested positive for hepatitis A. The company has since closed the facility and discarded all of the candy inside.

At this time, the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are not aware of any cases of hepatitis A related to consumption of these sweets.

Hepatitis A can have a long incubation period and can have serious health consequences for some people.

Hepatitis A is a virus that attacks the body through liver inflammation.

Meanwhile, hepatitis A is generally spread when a "person ingests fecal matter-even in microscopic amounts-from an infected person", said the regulator.

People infected with HAV may not have symptoms until 15 to 50 days after exposure. "Young children may not show symptoms of HAV infection", according to the recall.
