ExxonMobil and IBM team up to unpack quantum computing

IBM clearly spared no expense on the industrial design of the Q System One

The system is the latest step by IBM in its quantum-computing effort.

The Q System One has a modular and compact design optimized for stability, reliability and continuous commercial use.

"The IBM Q System One is a major step forward in the commercialization of quantum computing", said Senior Vice President of Hybrid Cloud and director of IBM Research, Arvind Krishna. It includes quantum hardware design for repeatable and predictable high-quality qubits (or quantum bits), cryogenic engineering to maintain cold temperature and an isolated environment, high-precision electronics to control large numbers of qubits, and secure cloud access alongside hybrid execution of quantum algorithms. The IBM system has its own Quantum firmware that will manage the system health and enable system upgrades without downtime.

IBM unveiled the world's first standalone quantum computer - the IBM Q System One - which is an architectural marvel yet powerful enough to leave the best supercomputers in the dust. It tapped the expertise of United Kingdom industrial and interior design studios Map Project Office and Universal Design Studio, and Goppion, a Milan-based manufacturer of high-end museum display cases that protect some of the world's most precious art including the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, and the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London.

For example, future applications for quantum computing may include finding and developing new materials for automotive application through quantum chemistry.

Quantum computers have the ability to revolutionize medical development, artificial intelligence, cryptography, financial models and climate simulations, and IBM imagines a world where they operate perfectly with traditional PCs and server farms. As the Q system has 20 qubits, it is still short of the 50 qubits that most researchers believe will be required real-life applications.

This computer is basically created to solve those problems which couldn't be solved by the simple systems and the company also states that this quantum computer holds the system which is till upgradable and could be changed for positive changes and could be easily maintained.

Looking at IBM's Q System One strengthens faith in commercial availability of quantum computers.

IBM explained that "qubits quickly lose their special quantum properties, typically within 100 microseconds (for state-of-the-art superconducting qubits), due in part to the interconnected machinery's ambient noise of vibrations, temperature fluctuations, and electromagnetic waves".

IBM managed to shed all that and build a compact handsome piece-of-art that rests inside a 9-foot tall, 9-foot wide half-inch borosilicate glass case.

IBM has a replica of the Q System One on display at CES. This is essential for the quantum chip - which must be stored at about 10 millikelvin, a fraction above absolute zero temperature - and for the additional electronics included in the Q System One.

Other companies also are in the quantum computing race.

IBM's Q Network is made up of Fortune 500 companies, startups, academic institutions and national research labs working to explore the technology's practical applications for science and business - ExxonMobil has now become the first energy company to join its ranks.
