DRC Catholic church warns of election uprising

Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary former Congolese Interior minister and presidential candidate casts his vote at a polling station in Kinshasa Democratic Republic of Congo

The co-spokesperson for the opposition coalition Lamuka, Olivier Kamitatu Etsu, said the people of Congo have made their statement known through the ballot and that no single individual should deprive them of their fundamental human right.

Congo's top electoral official says the announcement of the results of the presidential election has been postponed.

Cenco secretary-general Donatien Nshole told reporters at a media briefing on Thursday that data collected from polling stations showed that "the figures in its possession from polling stations voter tallies reveal the choice of one candidate as president of the republic". A senior church body called on the government to publish accurate results.

The United States and European Union urged Kinshasa to ensure a peaceful change of power.

In a Facebook post on Sunday morning, Chamisa challenges the commission in the DRC not to emulate acts of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, ZEC, which he accuses of rigging last year's elections against him.

Many opposition supporters are convinced that the election commission is delaying the results to buy time for Mr. Kabila to find a way to manipulate the results or negotiate a backroom deal with the opposition.

The EU echoed the AU's position.

But almost half of the votes remain uncounted.

Most foreign election observers were not invited or not accredited by CENI to oversee the elections, prompting criticism from the U.S. State Department, but it was partially overseen by 40,000 observers the DRC's Catholic church.

The electoral commission responded by saying the announcement could incite an uprising.

US President Donald Trump informed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that about 80 military personnel and "appropriate combat equipment" had been deployed to neighboring Gabon to support the security of US citizens and staffers and diplomatic facilities, the Military Times reported on Sunday. More U.S. troops could be deployed if needed in Gabon or Congo, he said in a letter to Congress.

Congo's ruling party, which backs Kabila's preferred candidate Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, has called the church's attitude "irresponsible and anarchist".

"SADC, therefore, must defend the truth and the democracy of Congo".

The commission is already facing accusations that it is biased in favour of the ruling party.

"Kabila is a dictator".

The group representing Congo's Catholic bishops said last week that its thousands of observers had gathered evidence that there was a clear victor in the election.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo's sheer size, its political history and its myriad problems are all reasons why observers have followed its election so closely.

Leading opposition candidate Martin Fayulu, a businessman and lawmaker, has accused Congolese authorities of impeding his campaign.
