Chinese Huawei employee, Polish former intel officer, arrested in Poland for espionage

A Chinese manager at tech giant Huawei was arrested in Poland and charged with espionage on behalf of China

The company has also come under fire for allegations that Huawei's Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou conspired to defraud banks to unwittingly clear transactions linked to Iran, in violation of U.S. Sanctions.

In a coordinated arrest, police also detained a Polish citizen named Piotr D. - a former Internal Security Agency official who now works for the telecom Orange Polska, according to Poland's TVP Info, which first reported the story.

The two employees arrested include a Chinese national and a Polish national, both of whom worked at Huawei in Poland.

According to the LinkedIn profile of "Stanislaw Wang" - Wang's Polish name, according to Polish media TVP - the detained Huawei employee worked at the Chinese consulate in Gdansk, Poland prior to his tenure at the Chinese tech firm. If found guilty they could face 10 years in jail.

A Huawei spokesman has said the company is aware of the arrest, but has made no further comment.

"One thing is clear: this is another nail in the coffin of Huawei's European ambitions", said Thorsten Benner, director of the Global Public Policy Institute, a think-tank.

Maciej Wasik, deputy head of Poland's special service, said the operation that resulted in the arrest of the two suspects had been under way for a long time and was planned with care.

During his time at Huawei, he attempted to create a favourable reputation for the Chinese company in Canada and to dispel worries that it is closely connected to the Chinese government.

Huawei is a major telecommunications equipment supplier in Canada, while Bradley is the chairman of the 5G Canada Council.

A high ranking Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou was also arrested by Canadian authorities in December 2018, at the request of the U.S. authorities.

Orange Polska said it handed over one employee's belongings to authorities.

She was reportedly charged with fraud for telling the UK-based banking company HSBC that the Chinese tech giant was in full compliance with United States sanctions against Iran, while one of its subsidiaries was not complying with the restrictions. In addition, a Polish cyber security expert has been in custody since Tuesday as well.

Huawei in December said it expects to see a 21 percent rise in revenue for 2018 despite what it called "unfair treatment" around the world.
