Chinese Huawei employee arrested on spying charge in Poland

A Chinese manager at tech giant Huawei was arrested in Poland and charged with espionage on behalf of China

Federal Bureau of Investigation director Chris Wray said in February that they were concerned about allowing a company "that is beholden to foreign governments that don't share our values to gain positions of power inside our telecommunications networks".

Poland has arrested a sales director for Chinese telecoms giant Huawei over allegations of working with Beijing's intelligence services.

A spokesman for the agency, Stanislaw Zaryn, said the two were arrested on Tuesday.

The two employees arrested include a Chinese national and a Polish national, both of whom worked at Huawei in Poland.

"The Chinese national is a businessman working in a major electronics company. the Pole is a person known in circles associated with cyber business", Maciej Wasik, the deputy head of Poland's special services, told PAP.

In December, a Czech cyber-security agency warned against using the software and hardware of Huawei and fellow Chinese company ZTE, saying they posed a threat to state security.

According to media outlet TVP, the other was a Polish national who used to work at the country's internal security agency (Agencja Bezpieczeństwa Wewnętrznego, ABW) and more recently Orange.

He said "both carried out espionage activities against Poland".

TVP reports that the Polish national, "Piotr D" was a former high-ranking member of Poland's internal security agency (AWB). If convicted, they face up to 10 years in jail, he said. Under Polish law, their last names can not be published ahead of trial. Huawei and Orange could not immediately be reached for comment.

"We have no comment for the time being. Huawei complies with all applicable laws and regulations in the countries where it operates, and we require every employee to abide by the laws and regulations in the countries where they are based".

United States intelligence agencies allege that Huawei is linked to China's government and that "backdoors" built into its technology could be exploited by government spy agencies.

In December, Canadian authorities arrested a top Huawei executive, Meng Wanzhou, at the behest of USA authorities as part of an investigation into alleged violations of US trade sanctions.
