Children injured in Beijing primary school attack in China

Police at the hospital where the injured children were treated

The primary school, Beijing No. 1 Affiliated Elementary School of Xuanwu Normal School, was founded in 1908.

The unnamed man is said to have targeted the youngsters around 11.15am local time at the school in the Xicheng district.

Twenty primary school students in Beijing have been injured in an attack at their school by an unidentified man, say officials in China.

The suspect was apprehended at the scene and an investigation has been launched, according to reports.

The Xicheng district government said in a post on its Weiboaccount that three of the children suffered heavy injuries and were in a stable condition.

But according to the South China Morning Post, the stabbing was carried out by a former temporary janitor who was angry at not having passed his probation.

Several of the pupils were taken to the intensive care unit of the nearby Xuanwu Hospital following the attack.

Accounts of what weapon was used have varied, with some parents claiming on social media that a hammer was used, while others reported a knife.

"A worker at our school attacked 20 students in a first-floor stairwell". Second grade classrooms are on the first floor, it was children from those classes. All the wounded children are receiving hospital treatment.

"At the moment, if we have not called you, your child should be safe".

Violent crime is rare in China but there has been a series of knife and axe attacks in recent years, many targeting children.

In October, a 39-year-old woman stormed a kindergarten in Chongqing, southwest China, injuring 14 kids with a kitchen knife.

Two children were also stabbed to death outside a Shanghai kindergarten in June, while nine children died in a knife attack at a school in Shaanxi province in April.
