Cadillac to lead GM's EV strategy

General Motors CEO Mary Barra on raising the automaker's guidance, the plant closings due to the company's transition, efforts to rebuild the Cadillac brand, competing against Tesla, the growth opportunities in China and the state of the USA consumer.

The Cadillac-badged EV is said to be underpinned by GM's new "BEV3" platform architecture, presumably purpose-built for electric vehicles. Alongside its bullish guidance, GM said it would use its Cadillac brand to compete with Tesla in the electric-vehcle market.

GM had previously focused on making electric vehicles under its mass market Chevrolet brand, including its plug-in Chevrolet Volt and battery electric Bolt. GM has already announced the end of production for the Volt, as well as the plug-in hybrid Cadillac CT6. According to Michael Albano, a GM spokesperson, the biggest automaker in the US restructured its entire product development organization in order to shift its focus to electric vehicles. These will range from a compact SUV, to a large seven-seat luxury crossover and a large commercial van. "We are confident Cadillac will be a leader in luxury EVs and our design and technology will excite customers".

However, there is also a major opportunity for Cadillac here in the United States given the recent strong performance of Tesla. He left GM in April.

Mary Barra, GM's CEO, said this week that the company aims to sell 1 million electric vehicles per year by 2026.

It is possible that the electric Cadillac will be targeted at the Chinese market where the government has implemented an aggressive electrification strategy to combat air quality problems and reduce the reliance on oil imports; the country aims to boost hybrid and electric vehicle sales 10 fold over the next decade via incentives and mandates.
