Bolsonaro "declares war" on Brazil's indigenous people

Brazil's President Open To Possibility Of U.S. Military Base, Expresses Russia Concerns

Bolsonaro has vowed to crack down on Brazil's rampant crime by extending immunity to soldiers and police using lethal force and easing gun laws so "good" citizens can challenge armed criminals. More than 50 suspects have been arrested since the violence broke out.

Bolsonaro, a 63-year-old former Army captain and admirer of Brazil's 1964-1985 military dictatorship and U.S. President Donald Trump, has quickly deepened ties with the Unites States and Israel, with plans to move the Brazilian embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

At TeleSUREnglish, Ignacio Limas reported that there is speculation in Brazil "that the restructuring of the pension system may take the shape of the Chilean retirement system", which is heralded by conservatives in the US but has been blamed for helping to usher in some of the worst wealth inequality in the developed world.

Investors applauded the first bold steps, sending the stock market to a record high and strengthening the Brazilian real against the dollar.

And Bolsonaro also announced a tax increase contrary to a campaign pledge.

Later on Friday, Bolsonaro's Chief of Staff Onyx Lorenzoni appeared to walk back what Bolsonaro said on minimum age requirement, saying it was one option and that no final decision had been made by the president's economic team.

Bolsonaro, who took office on January 1, said in a television interview on Thursday he might be willing to allow a USA base in Brazil as a way to counter Russian influence in Venezuela, a move that would mark a sharp shift in direction for Brazilian foreign policy.

That dissent could reach Bolsonaro's cabinet, where seven of his 22 ministers are retired military officers. "Terrorists" would have to be taken to places, "where the society is entirely free from them". "The Palestinian issue is already overloading people in the Arab world for the most part".

In terms of the outlook under Bolsonaro for Latin America's biggest economy, "for the moment, it's the honeymoon phase", said Andre Cesar with the consulting firm Hold.

Bolsonaro also targeted Brazil's native population by signing an executive order that makes it hard for new land to be allocated for indigenous communities and descendants of slaves. The Venezuelan president, in his turn, has suggested that the election of Bolsonaro would result in emergence of leftist governments across the region.
