The Japanese billionaire is believed to have a net worth of close to $3billion was celebrating the massive sales of 10bn yen his company made over the Christmas and New Year and chose to give back to 100 lucky Twitter users.

The record now belongs to Yusaku Maezawa, who has pledged to give away 100m yen (£725,000) to his followers.

"Zozotown spring sale is the fastest in history and topped 10 billion yen!" he tweeted. With a daily appreciation, I will give 100 million yen (total of gifts million yen) in cash.

Mr Maezawa's sharp rise to top spot means former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson moves into fourth position with his 2011 tweet to Harry Styles. The reception is up to 1/7.

According to Forbes, Maezawa has a net worth valued at $2 billion and was ranked among Japan's 50 richest people of 2018. He will be the first private passenger to be flown around the moon by SpaceX some time in 2023 and plans to bring a group of artists with him.

In October, Mr Maezawa tweeted that he purchased a 1717 Stradivarius violin. The billionaire tweeted a photo of a man riding a rocket in an homage to the wildly popular Steven Spielberg film ET to accompany the unexpected giveaway. That post had 3.58 million retweets and 990,000 likes.

Not missing a beat, electronics company Sharp seized the viral moment to make their own, tongue-in-cheek tweet off the back of Maezawa's giveaway.

Maezawa has more than six million followers on Twitter. The application method doesn't involve having to RT or follow us, you can just buy it from any store.

The number of people following Maezawa's account surged from around 500,000 at the end of last week to more than 4.5 million by Monday lunchtime, according to the Japan Times.

Initially, Mr Wilkerson was told by Wendy's he would need 18 million retweets to win the prize, however they still gave him the nuggets and made a $US100,000 donation in his name even though he fell a long way short of their target. It took Wilkerson about a month after his initial tweet to beat the previous record holder, Ellen DeGeneres, who posted a celebrity-packed selfie taken by Bradley Cooper at the 2014 Oscars.
