Arctic weather system sparks HEAVY SNOW tomorrow -Britain set for COLDEST weekend

A cold snap is on the way after mild weather

The Met Office forecast the weather will be windy on Wednesday with rain moving south-eastwards.

Scotland, northern England and even parts further south are on alert for wintry downpours towards the end of the week and into the weekend.

"The week beginning Monday, January 21, there is a stronger signal of it getting colder, that would increase the risk of snow across the United Kingdom".

The long-range forecast from the Met Office also warns that the end of January and early February have "an increased likelihood of cold weather being established across all of the United Kingdom, with temperatures continuing a downward trend to become cold or very cold".

"Another front moves in from the north on Thursday introducing properly cold air to the country and this is when we expect much colder conditions across the UK. But there is nothing in the next week or so that could indicate any change like the Beast from the East".

Temperatures are predicted to plummet as low as -17C, according to The Weather Company.

She said: "During the day on Wednesday we could see temperatures of 10C (50F) or 11C (51.8F), however by Thursday we are looking at maximums in single figures". There will be some snow perhaps with enough for accumulations on the hills.

The thermostat will remain on a dial-down into the weekend when there will be a greater risk of widespread snow, she warned.

"The rain could turn to snow at times, particularly across northern, central and eastern areas, especially later in this period".

It adds: "There remains uncertainty over the extent of the cold weather and how long it will last".

"Thereafter, it looks to become colder across the United Kingdom due to the recent stratospheric warming event, but brief milder interludes can't be ruled out". He estimates a 70% chance of a severe cold spell around...

It could be the Met Office's finest moment. The actual SSW has already taken place, it took place at the turn of the year.

Heavy snowfall and extreme winter conditions have also left people stranded and cut off in countries including Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria in recent weeks.
