AMD Makes Laptop, Chromebook Push With New Mobile Processors

Asus new Chromebooks

These include rubber bumpers, liquid-resistant keyboards that also prevent tampering with individual keys, and, in the case of the Chromebook Tablet CT100, a "strong tempered glass" protecting the display.

The C204 and C403 will be traditional clamshell laptops, coming in 11.6-inch and 14-inch sizes respectively, while the C214 will be a 14-inch convertible. It has a 1366x768 resolution display.

The entire family of new devices will all feature similar specs and a common design aesthetic.

As far as the other two products announced, the Chromebook Flip C214 is a 2-in-1 that's powered by a dual-core Intel Celeron and up to 64GB of internal storage that can be expanded via microSD. Meanwhile, Asus is also launching a tablet that runs on Google's Chrome OS. The 10mm thick tablet has been created to be dropped from up to 1m with a rubberised finish and sports a USB-C connector for charging and connecting other devices.

Asus is calling it the launch of its Chromebook Education series, created to provide "lightweight, ruggedized Chrome OS computer solutions" for the education sector. The new tablet weighs in at 568 grams. Beside those is a full-size keyboard that ships with backlighting as a standard feature while the edge houses two USB 3.1 Type-C charging ports pulling double duty as a means for data transfers and display-out capabilities. This port configuration will serve users well as we all try to make that transition to USB-C.

An all-day battery life is promised but Asus hasn't detailed specific timings as yet. The 14-inch display can either be a 1366×768 non-touch panel or, for an additional $30, a 1920×1080 touch screen.

Connections include two USB Type-C ports, two USB Type-A slots, a microSD card reader, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and for video calling a HD webcam.

HP advertises that the Chromebook 14 will last 9 hours and 15 minutes on average, which is often generous estimates.
