Watch the first 'Game of Thrones' season 8 teaser

A new teaser for the final season suggests there’s a bloodbath

Disappointingly, the video doesn't actually contain any new footage.

"It's an incredibly emotional haunting bittersweet final season and I think it honors very much what [author George R.R. Martin] set out to do - which is flipping this kind of story on its head".

The first teaser for the eighth and final season of HBO's Game of Thrones has finally arrived.

It shows a dragon and direwolf become overtaken by ice while a lion gets consumed by fire.

All good? Let's point out a few things you may have noticed. But the teaser also clearly aligns the Wolf and Dragon (Houses Stark and Targaryen) - with ice, and the Lion (House Lannistetr) with fire.

Season 7 ended (spoiler ahead!) with the Night King getting control of one of Daenerys' dragons by dragging its corpse out of the ice and resurrecting it for his own uses, which included burning down The Wall and its protective magic with ice-fire. Will fire or ice prevail, and will that mean life or death for Westeros and beyond? If the result is dragonglass, it's worth noting that's one of the few ways White Walkers can be killed.

Game of Thrones will be broadcast on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in April 2019. The network has not released an official premiere date yet for season eight.

The final season will be just six-episodes long.
