United Kingdom government found in contempt of parliament

UK told Brexit could be cancelled without approval of other members

The first day of debate has been overshadowed by concerns surrounding the government's legal advice on May's Brexit deal - which was not published in full and shared with government officials.

It comes as reports have emerged that Government whips have been holding conversations about pulling the all important vote due to be held next Tuesday.

"Today's finding of contempt is a badge of shame for this Government".

The contempt of parliament motion tabled by Labour and other opposition parties, including PM Theresa May's confidence and supply partners, the DUP, was passed by 311 votes to 293.

Once the results of the two votes were announced, Labour's Keir Starmer described the situation as "unprecedented" and noted that the legal advice must now be published in full.

The repercussions of an MP being found in contempt can include them being suspended or expelled from parliament.

The small Northern Irish party, the Democratic Unionists, which props up Ms May's minority Government, joined Opposition parties in voting against the Government on the contempt issue.

As soon as the almost two-and-a-half hour grilling was over, Labour's shadow solicitor general stood up to demand a debate on the government being in contempt of parliament.

The Pound will continue to experience volatility in the coming days as Theresa May works to push her deal through Parliament, a prospect many political analysts believed unlikely before today's developments.

Ms Haddon said the contempt motion was a "show of force" which could foreshadow both the final vote on the deal and the various amendments lawmakers are trying to attach to it.

Attorney General Geoffrey Cox was dispatched to field MPs' questions and promised he would answer whatever they wanted to know.

Sky sources have been told that Mr Cox's legal advice concludes that the European Court of Justice would not in practice force the United Kingdom to stay in the backstop against its will if a case was brought by the government.

Their complaint to Mr Bercow said a 52-page summary of the advice "does not comply" with a Commons vote last month, which demanded the full text be released.

An attempt by ministers to refer the whole issue to a committee of MPs was earlier defeated earlier by four votes.
