Trump wants talks with Putin, Xi to end 'uncontrollable arms race'

Trump US China Russia to discuss arms race halt

Putin emphasized that he remains ready to meet with Trump "when the U.S. side is ready for this", adding that he didn't believe the USA president may have cancelled the G20 meeting over fears that he face new attacks by his Democratic opponents over allegations of ties to Russian Federation. "Contacts "on the move" are very useful, but a serious conversation is needed, and we were ready for this conversation, including in relation to the [G20] summit", he added.

The treaty prevents the US from developing certain nuclear cruise missiles, a limitation not faced by China, which is not a signatory of the treaty.

"In a nutshell, I answered his questions about this incident in the Black Sea", Putin said, speaking to reporters at his post-summit press conference.

Trump's Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had said the gathering was cancelled "because the Russians behaved in a way that is deeply inconsistent with worldwide law". The two leaders had originally been set to have a longer, more formal meeting, but Trump cancelled it over Russia's recent aggression toward Ukraine. He has his position.

As reported by the portal Znayu press Secretary of the White house Sarah Sanders has confirmed that trump and Putin spent a casual conversation on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Argentina.

"He has his own position, I have my own position". He had avoided greeting Putin when leaders posed for a picture ahead of the summit on Friday.

This comes a little over a month after Trump announced the United States was withdrawing from the 1987 intermediate-range nuclear forces treaty (INF), a move that prompted swift criticism from European leaders and nuclear experts.

Last week Russian Federation seized three Ukrainian ships and 24 sailors following a clash in the Kerch Strait.

Russian Federation had said it was ready to discuss nuclear disarmament at a planned meeting between Putin and Trump on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Argentina.

He noted that a tension over the two leaders' meeting created a unique situation when experts and media representatives are "guessing" about whether this meeting will take place.
