Tom Cruise Surprise Releases Late Contender for Film of the Year

Tom Cruise Is Here to Tell You to Turn Off Your TV's Motion Smoothing Setting Damn It

Tom Cruise has declared war on modern flatscreen devices.

Millions of Britons bought HD-ready televisions over the past decade on the promise of being able to enjoy their favourite programmes in superior picture quality. "This is sometimes referred to as the 'soap opera effect'". Viewers have also complained that the action looks "too real" and excessively sharp. And like any serious film lover, Cruise is no fan of the "motion smoothing" effect that comes as a factory setting on many television screens.

Did you know that you needed 87 seconds of Tom Cruise, human actor, explaining motion smoothing?

They continued to share the fact that Hollywood is working with TV manufacturers to make motion smoothing easier to turn off.

In a PSA recently published on Twitter, Cruise and Mission: Impossible - Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie tackle the soap opera effect.

"Video interpolation, or motion smoothing, is a digital effect on most high definition televisions and is meant to reduce motion blur in sporting events and other high definition programming".

It means the average viewer finds it too hard to turn off - and many realise something looks unusual without being able to pinpoint what it is.

"If you own a modern high-definition television, there's a good chance you're not watching movies the way the filmmakers intended", McQuarrie said.

In the meantime, the pair recommends a quick internet search to find step-by-step instructions on how to disable the setting. Different TV makers call it by different names, including Sony's MotionFlow, Samsung's Auto Motion Plus and LG's TruMotion.

We'll be honest, this isn't what we expected of the first video from the long-awaited Top Gun sequel.
