Tom Cruise is Worried You're Watching Movies at Home Wrong

In a video with Mission: Impossible - Fallout director Chris McQuarrie, Cruise taught viewers about "video interpolation", which many fans may know as the easier-to-spell term "motion smoothing".

They wanted to inform audiences that when enjoying Mission: Impossible - Fallout, as well as other action films, home TVs are set in such a way that detracts from the filmmakers original intent. It's instantly noticeable when you go to someone else's house and Inception looks like Eastenders, but if you're used to it, you might not know it's a setting you can change. "To that end, we'd like a moment of your time to talk about video interpolation", said Cruise.

"If you own a modern high-definition television there's a good chance you're not watching movies the way film-makers intended, and the ability for you to do so is not simple for you to access", McQuarrie added. Cruise and McQuarrie recommended that consumers do an internet search to find out how to disable motion smoothing on their HDTV sets.

In an impassioned video posted to Twitter on Tuesday, the Mission Impossible star warned that a default setting on many high-end televisions "makes most movies look like they were shot on high-speed video instead of film".

"Turn off motion smoothing [your brand of TV here]".

"On behalf of everyone who works so hard to bring you the very best motion picture experience, thank you very much", Cruise concludes. But while it's great for sports, it tends to make movies and TV shows look like garbage.

At the time of writing, Cruise's PSA already has nearly 2 million views, so we're guessing Motion Smoothing is getting deselected in droves across the world.
