The diplomat returned to Riyadh in early October shortly after the killing of the dissident Saudi journalist at the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul. The Saudis have charged 11 people in the case.

There remained no question among most senators on Tuesday after the closed-door briefing with CIA Director Gina Haspel that Mohammed was directly connected to the killing. Sen.

As The Daily Beast points out, Stewart's comments are similar to ones Trump made last month when speaking to reporters.

"I would imagine in a Democratic administration, I would be all over them for being in the pocket of Saudi Arabia", Graham said of Mattis and Pompeo.

Mr Khashoggi was killed - and is believed to have been dismembered - after entering the Saudi consulate to obtain paperwork for his upcoming marriage.

Ahmed noted that "when Mohammed bin Salman came, he cleaned house", and the Central Intelligence Agency lost most of its assets inside the palace, making the crown prince "their only source of information".

"This is conduct that none of us in America would approve of in any way", Shelby said. He said he would "question somebody's judgment if they couldn't figure this out". If he was in front of jury he would be convicted in 30 minutes, guilty.

John McCain, who has been on board with much of President Donald Trump's agenda since McCain's death in August, Graham has sided with critics of Trump's Saudi Arabia policy over the Khashoggi incident.

While the Trump administration has repeatedly distinguished Khashoggi's murder and the war in Yemen as separate issues, lawmakers are tying both together as a showcase of how blank-check support for Saudi Arabia erodes US moral standing.

Saudi Arabia has said the prince had no prior knowledge of the murder. The U.S. resident was critical of the Saudi regime.

The CIA has concluded Mohammed bin Salman "probably ordered" the killing of Khashoggi.

Khashoggi's Washington Post editor, Karen Attiah, said that he should be expelled from the U.S. outright.

"We heard the clearest testimony I've ever heard from intelligence this morning", Corker also said.

He then offered a veiled criticism of Trump. Chris Murphy, a Democrat Connecticut who co-sponsored a bipartisan resolution calling for an end to the USA role in Yemen.

A senior Turkish official Wednesday said the prosecutor's move "reflects the view that the Saudi authorities won't take formal action against those individuals".

The proposed resolution says Prince Mohammed was in control of security forces at the time of Khashoggi's murder and that the Senate has "a high level of confidence" that the prince was complicit in the killing.

The killing of Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and a critic of Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, at Riyadh's consulate in Istanbul, has strained Saudi Arabia's ties with the West and battered the prince's image overseas. How the legislative push gets resolved is uncertain, but the floor fight could begin as soon as Monday - and put the administration on the defensive.
