Samsung Supplier Officials, Employees Charged For Leaking OLED Tech To Chinese Rivals

The group are accused of using a shell company, separate phones and personal email addresses to transmit the confidential information from Samsung.

The Suwon District Prosecutors' Office said on Thursday that it had charged the chief executive and eight employees of Toptec, an equipment manufacturer engaged in the production of smartphone displays, with selling on confidential Samsung technology.

One of next year's most heated battles in the mobile world will be the one between the different foldable smartphones.

Another company that is believed to have benefited from the leak is China Star Optoelectronics Technology, the No. 2 display panel maker in China at present.

"Our company has never provided Samsung Display's industrial technology or business secrets to a Chinese client". Samsung already demoed its handset with flexible OLED display at a San Francisco conference early this month ahead of its early-2019 target release. The names of the companies and individuals weren't disclosed.

Samsung Display responded to the news, saying that it's "shocked at the results of the investigation by prosecutors, at a time when competitors are intensifying their technological rivalry".

As a little reminder, Samsung has spent in the ballpark of 150 billion won ($134 million USD) over the last six years to create its bendable OLED tech. Samsung Display also said it would keep a close eye on the upcoming trial.

It turns out that some might have been hard at work doing something else, however, as Reuters reports that prosecutors in South Korea have charged nine people for illegally trading documents describing technology developed by Samsung.
