Quake damage puts the brakes on Alaska Railroad service

At least eight aftershocks have rippled through the city after the quake hit at 8.29am, the largest one measuring 5.8 magnitude in Anchorage. Anchorage officials urged residents not to stock up and hoard supplies because the supply chain of goods was not interrupted. There were no reports of serious injuries.

President Donald Trump previously declared an emergency in the state.

The federal courthouse in Anchorage was among structures that remained closed.

Officials announced the U.S. District Court and attached federal building in Anchorage will be closed at least through Thursday following a preliminary evaluation by the General Services Administration.

Life is slowly settling down in Alaska following a powerful quake that rattled buildings, disrupted power and caused heavy damage to the only highway that goes north of Anchorage.

Aftershocks Saturday continued to fray nerves, with people worrying about being caught in more massive shakers.

GSA spokesman Chad Hutson said boilers in the federal building were leaking, leaving it without heat.

The nearby Historic Federal Building, where the bankruptcy court is located, also is closed. Officials said it will be ready to reopen once minor cleanup is complete.

Aftershocks from Friday's powerful Alaskan natural disaster continued to pound the area around Anchorage on Saturday, as workers strove to patch up buckled roads and residents began cleaning up damage around their homes and businesses.

"This is one of those weekends, boy, stay home and stream Netflix", Anchorage Fire Chief Jodie Hettrick said during a December 1 news conference.

The 7.0 magnitude quake struck Friday morning about 8 miles (13 km) north of Anchorage, the state's largest city with 300,000 residents, disrupting rush-hour traffic and jamming telephone service. But state transportation officials again urged people who live north and south of Anchorage to take the day off or work from home to reduce traffic.

The event even triggered a tsunami warning for the town of Kodiak, Alaska, but the city quickly seems to be bouncing back.

Aftershocks from Friday's magnitude 7.0 quake will continue to diminish over time, but that doesn't mean the shaking will stop right away.

The state late Saturday identified 47 earthquake-damaged roads and bridges, most of which can not be fully repaired until the region's dark and snowy winter has passed. However, at least one grocery store Sunday had no milk, and little to no bottled water, bread or bananas.
