President George H.W. Bush’s Service Dog ‘Sully’ Salutes Companion At Capitol

In an invocation opening proceedings, the US House chaplain, the Reverend Patrick J Conroy, praised Mr Bush's commitment to public service, from Navy pilot to congressman, United Nations ambassador, envoy to China and then Central Intelligence Agency director before being elected vice-president and then president - the first incumbent to do so in over 100 years.

Former President George H.W. Bush died on Friday at the age of 94.

Friends and family will celebrate his life during a memorial service at the National Cathedral in Washington.

The Episcopal service will include four eulogies, from Bush's son, the former president, former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, former Senator Alan Simpson and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Evan Meacham, who wrote a biography of Bush.

Trained to assist United States army veterans as part of the VetDogs programme, Sully was joined by several army veterans - some of who were in wheelchairs from injuries incurred during their time in action - and one of the late president's sons, Neil Bush. Service dogs are trained to do that. The former president's children and family - including former President George W. Bush - attended a Monday ceremony for the late president.

Bush was elected president in 1988 after serving two terms as President Ronald Reagan's vice president. Bush, a Navy pilot, survived a bail-out from his stricken aircraft over the Pacific and an earlier crash landing.

Sully will have two co-workers in the role, service dogs Sgt. Dillon and Sgt. Truman.
