Ohio State's Urban Meyer to retire from coaching

Head coach Urban Meyer of the Ohio State Buckeyes speaks to media after defeating the Northwestern Wildcats at Lucas Oil Stadium

Over the past few weeks, reports suggested Urban Meyer was in the final stretch run as the Ohio State head coach. Meyer's last game with the Buckeyes will be their Rose Bowl showdown with Washington on January 1.

"A myriad of factors contributed to Meyer's decision", Thamel wrote, "but sources say foremost among them was his happiness with the state of the Ohio State program he inherited seven years ago".

Coach Meyer will be announcing his retirement at an afternoon press conference, and coach Ryan Day will be introduced as head coach.

Issues from the cyst, that Meyer had surgery to drain in 2014, have become more severe in recent months.

New North Carolina coach Mack Brown, who spoke with Meyer this morning, told CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd that Meyer's health was a primary concern. He left Florida the following year after the 2010 campaign and took a year away from coaching to spend time with his family.

"No disrespect to the other bowl games, because they're awesome, but the Rose is the one we've always looked forward to", Meyer said.

Tate Martell #18 of the Ohio State Buckeyes breaks free on a 47-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter of the game against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Ohio Stadium on September 8, 2018 in Columbus, Ohio.

Meyer led the Gators to national championships in 2006 and 2008 and went 13-1 three times at UF (also in 2009). Perhaps just as important as all of that, Meyer never lost to MI. Meyer came under fire for his response - or lack thereof - in regards to allegations of domestic abuse against one of his assistant coaches.

Meyer led the Buckeyes to an undefeated record in his first season at the helm in 2012, one in which the program was barred from a bowl game due to NCAA sanctions. CFT had caught wind of speculation that it wouldn't be surprising at all if Meyer were not the Buckeyes' head coach next season, whispers that grew a little louder given the embarrassing loss in West Lafayette this and what some have described as Meyer's "anguished... emotional... erratic" sideline demeanor. He coached for two years at Bowling Green and two years at Utah before joining Florida in 2005.
