Microsoft's next browser might be based on Chromium

Windows 10 hasn't quite overtaken Windows 7. Yet

It's unknown when the browser could launch. Naming aside, it's also not clear whether the Anaheim browser will keep any of Edge's user interface or opt for a complete redesign.

According to analytics service Net Applications, Edge now has a 4.2 percent share of the browser market as of this November, while Chrome is at 65.6 percent.

In the Windows Central post, Zac Bowden reveals that Windows Insiders could be seeing work on the new Chromium-based browser soon, and The Verge is reporting that Microsoft may make an announcement as soon as this week.

For the uninitiated, Chromium is the open-source web rendering engine that forms the basis of the ever-popular Google Chrome browser.

It's good news for web developers because it's one less rendering engine to deal with - Firefox and Safari are the last of the big browsers not to run on the Chromium code.

Microsoft is reportedly giving up on Edge, and instead building a Chromium-powered web browser to be the default browser for Windows 10. However, due to a plethora of bugs and instability, Windows 10 users never lapped it up in the same manner as Google's Chrome. But if all this is true, then Microsoft's EdgeHTML engine and Edge as we know it will be no more.

This new Windows OS, simply called "Lite" for now, could directly take on Google's own minimalist Chrome OS. This initiative could also pave the way for development of the new Chromium-based browser. As a result, any Windows 10 system that is running AMP will have a block in place put on the upgrade. Some, including Mozilla developers, have been anxious that as Blink and WebKit's (a very similar rendering engine to Blink) market share increases, developers will have no interest in testing their websites on other browsers. However, it's a little different for open source projects because they aren't usually controlled by a single entity. It's been a long time since we've seen a browser created by Microsoft hold any significant market share, but that could well be set to change in the future.
