Microsoft uses AI to provide live captions and subtitles in Skype calls

Make your presentations more inclusive with Live Captions & Subtitles in PowerPoint

Users can turn the setting on or off in the call section under settings.

Microsoft is looking to level the playing field in PowerPoint with live captions and subtitles.

Microsoft has announced Skype will soon get call captioning with live captions and subtitles. In a future update, the developers plan to enable an optional separate window for subtitles so you can scroll back in case you miss something.

As of now, the captions and subtitles will automatically scroll in the call.

This type of feature is something we have seen become a trait of Microsoft who has already made similar steps in both making the Windows 10 operating system more useable to many people with visual disabilities, along with making an Xbox controller that caters for various types of physical disabilities.

The announcement coincided with the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

The new feature are supposed to improve inclusivity on both Skype and PowerPoint, so it will likely be a welcome addition for many. To turn on live captions and subtitles during a call, select the More button and click on Turn subtitles on. Skype team don't want users to miss a moment, be it in a video or in the live subtitles. This is so that they can offer better services for more users, and help Skype users understand each other even when they speak different languages.

Starting in late January 2019 for Office 365 subscribers, PowerPoint will have the ability to provide captions and subtitles in real-time. These real-time translations will be real-time in nature and users will be able to turn them on and off with a simple setting toggle for specific calls.

The cool thing is, Microsoft also has expanded for the live translation capability, as the company will release the translation for more than 20 languages and dialects in the upcoming weeks.
